History Tours for Schools

This tour concentrates on how people have lived at Muncaster since Medieval times and how changes in society have influenced the use and construction of the castle. The Pennington family have continuously occupied the site since at least 1208 which adds a personal focus which school children can relate to.

Participants of our History Tour can compare life in the past to how we live today through studying everyday objects (a hands on approach is encouraged) and through the tales told about the people who have lived and worked there. The History tour takes approximately 1 hour and works best if the school group starts the tour at least ¾ of an hour before the Castle opens to the general public at 12 noon. The maximum number of children we are able to accommodate on a tour is 20 (plus staff) and so larger groups need to arrive as early as possible to enable us to do more than 1 tour. School parties can tour the Castle once it has opened to the public but this has to be using the wand interactive tour system, and cannot be a personal tour. If this option is taken, a group must be split into smaller units of 5 or 6 pupils each accompanied by a responsible adult and should tour the Castle together. Castle tours are currently only available on Wednesdays and Thursdays.  Please call us on 01229 717 614 to book.
