Cumbria’s Top Dog Friendly Attraction
Muncaster Gardens really are doggy heaven; with miles of paths which wind their way through more than 70 acres of wild, woodland garden and full of exciting smells and interesting corners to explore.
Being a genuinely dog friendly attraction, furry friends are very welcome in the gardens of Muncaster and are admitted without charge as long as they are accompanied by a responsible owner who keeps them on a lead and ‘scoops the poop’. That said, there are some restrictions on where dogs can go so please read on to make the most of your visit to us with your dog. If you’re in the Lake District and looking for attractions that cater for dogs, look no further.
Hawk & Owl Centre & Displays
For the welfare of our birds, dogs are not allowed in the Hawk & Owl Centre including the Old Rose Garden arena where the “World of Owls” display takes place (11.30am in the main season) but there is a special viewing area for dogs and their owners on the Meadow for the afternoon “Sky Hunters” bird of prey display (2pm in the main season). And everyone (including dogs) is welcome at the Wild Heron Feed, daily year round on the Cannon Bank at 4pm in the main season and 3pm in winter.
Cafes & Shops
Although dogs are not allowed in the main café in the Stable Yard (except assistance dogs*), there is ample outdoor seating including some under cover and they can also accompany their owners into the Carriage House gift shop. Dogs are allowed in the Owl Garden Tea Room and Gift Shop at the entrance to the Hawk & Owl Centre and can also wait there (accompanied please!) while their owners take it in turns to go round the Centre.
Castle & Meadowvole Maze
Dogs cannot go inside the Castle itself (except assistance dogs*). Should their owners wish to tour the Castle in turn, this takes around 40 minutes for the average visitor. They are also not allowed in the Meadowvole Maze, which takes around 10 minutes for the average visitor. There is ample seating around the door s for those waiting (although there’s always somewhere different for another walk instead!).
Stay over with your dog
Why not stay over and spend more time exploring our lovely corner of the Western Lake District? We have dog-friendly letting rooms available both at Muncaster in the Coachmans Quarters B&B and also at the 3* Pennington Hotel in nearby Ravenglass, where you can dine with your dog in their Estuary Bar & Grill and at the neighbouring Inn At Ravenglass.
Assistance dogs may go with their handlers into the Castle, main café and Meadowvole Maze. As the presence even of assistance dogs will distress the birds, please ask before coming into the Hawk & Owl Centre so that a member of the falconers’ team can advise you and escort you as necessary.
Water bowls are available at the Main Gate, the Owl Garden Tearoom and in the Stable Yard by the main café. If at all possible, please avoid leaving dogs in cars particularly on warm days; come prepared to take turns round the dog-restricted areas of our site instead.
Please note that many of the walks away from the main paths around the site are rough and can be muddy during or after wet weather so owners should bring suitable outdoor shoes and clothing and perhaps an old towel or two to ensure the journey home is not dominated by that wonderful aroma of wet pooch!
