Born in 1930 and brought up in Morayshire, it was Patrick Gordon-Duff’s marriage to then Muncaster heir Phyllida which brought him to the Castle and eventually the family made Muncaster their full-time home.
He has been a farmer, manager of great estates, public servant and self-confessed thorn in the flesh of troublesome politicians.

Known for his love of life on the land and of the people of the hills and islands, although now in his eighties Patrick is still usually to be found either chatting to Muncaster’s visitors or tending the gardens on which he is a considerable authority.

Writing as Patrick of the Hills, his poems capture the spirit of an endangered way of life in the wild and beautiful places of Scotland and the north of England. They celebrate the achievements of good people in their battle with ignorance and bureaucracy. They are also a powerful plea to the next generation to avoid the stupidities of the past.
