Muncaster
will never be an "excellent" site for wheelchair access to everywhere,
recent improvements, however, have concentrated on ensuring maximum
access to all aspects of the site within the constraints of our
topography and responsibilities in caring for a Grade I listed castle
and its associated buildings.
The Castle is approximately half
a mile from the Information Centre at Main Gate, therefore we advise
people with limited mobility to park in the coach park which is
much closer to all facilities. Coming from the north pass the main
car park and take the first turning on the right. When travelling
from the south take the first turning on the left at the top of
the hill. It is signposted "Coach Park". This is a much
smaller car park and gets very busy therefore we ask that you only
use this if you or your passenger are a wheelchair user or have
difficulty walking the half mile down the main drive.
Wheelchairs to loan
We have wheelchairs on site which
you are more than welcome to borrow to make your visit comfortable.
It is advisable to book these in advance as numbers are limited.
We also have one electric scooter.
Wheelchair Access
The main areas of the Gardens and
Owl Centre and MeadowVole Maze allow wheelchair access. The ground
floor of the Castle (where the majority of the audio tour takes
place) is also accessible by wheelchair.
Castle Tours
Castle tours take the form of an
audio tour - these are available with specialist tapes for visitors
with visual impairments, and with induction loops for auditory disabilities,
or in written form.
Toilets
Accessible toilets are situated
in the Stable Yard and in the Coach Park.
Awards
We were the winners of Cumbria Tourist
Board's 1999 "Tourism For All" award.
Muncaster staff
have had "Welcome All" and "Welcome Host" training.
