Rebecca Taylor from Sale in Cheshire was crowned the North of England’s Best New Stand-up Comedian at Muncaster Castle in the Western Lake District on Saturday 24th May.
Rebecca Taylor and Lynne Crook from Lancaster went head to head in the final round of the competition which was held as part of the Cabaret @ The Castle event at Muncaster.
Rebecca won the biggest audience cheer of the night after an 8 minute routine which included a mix of traditional stand-up and some hilarious songs.
Peter Frost Pennington from Muncaster Castle says: “Rebecca and Lynne were two excellent finalists who really had the audience in stitches. Rebecca was a very worthy winner who demonstrated exceptional talent. I’m sure that we will be hearing a lot more about her in future.
“Lynne was also very impressive, particularly as she only started doing stand-up a few months ago. Both women have certainly shown that stand-up comedy is no longer the preserve of male comedians.”
Rebecca Taylor is an Artistic Leader at the Cotton Shed theatre company at Haslingden near Rossendale in Lancashire. She studied stand-up as part of a course at the University of Salford and has performed at a number of venues including the Frog and Bucket in Manchester.
As well as holding the title of the North of England’s Best New Stand-up Comedian Rebecca won a £750 cash prize.
Rebecca says: “It was a fantastic evening in a really lovely place. It was fabulous to win the title and it’s really spurred me on to do more. I’d love to be able to do stand-up full time and after this evening it feels as though anything is possible.”
Lyne Crook is a tutor in English Literature at Lancaster University. She started doing stand-up in March this year after doing a course with the Liverpool Comedy Trust. She went away with a cheque from Muncaster Castle for £250.
The Festival of Fools will continue with a variety of family entertainment during the day at Muncaster up to Thursday 29th May. The climax of the Festival is a competition on Thursday to find the next Fool of Muncaster.
