JAPANESE JOURNALISTS GO FISHING FOR STORIES IN THE LAKE DISTRICT

One of Japan’s leading television stations has been filming in the Lake District this week.

The visit by Nippon Television (NTV) follows last month’s successful visit to Japan by a group of tourism businesses from the Lakes.

On Monday NTV filmed English Lakes Hotel’s chef Craig Sherrington fishing for Arctic Char on Lake Windermere and then cooking and serving the fish at the Storrs Hall Hotel.

Arctic Char are largely a sea fish but some landlocked holdovers from the last ice age can be found in a few lakes like Windermere.

Craig Sherrington has a growing reputation as one of the Lake District’s leading chefs and is well known for his imaginative use of local produce.

He says: “We’re very lucky in the Lake District to have such a wide range of excellent products that we can use in our cooking.  Windermere is one of the few places in Britain that you can find Arctic Char and it is always very popular.  It is closely related to Trout and Salmon but has a flavour that many people prefer to both these fish.”

Colin Fox, English Lake Hotels’ Marketing Manager, who took part in the Japan Forum’s visit last month says: ‘We met one of NTV’s directors in Tokyo and he was very interested to hear about Storrs Hall and the history of the house.  He also wanted to know more about local foods such as Arctic Char.

“The Japanese market is obviously very important to the Lake District and we are keen for people there to find out more about the area.”

NTV also visited Muncaster in the Western Lake District where they filmed in the Castle and the World Owl Centre.

Peter Frost Pennington from Muncaster also took part in the visit to Japan.  He says: “We’re very pleased that NTV have come to film at the Castle.  Japanese visitors have tended not to travel over to this side of the Lake District so this is a great opportunity to show them how much we have to offer.”
