Directions to Muncaster Castle

Muncaster is located in the heart of the Western Lake District close to Ravenglass, an old Roman port and the only coastal village in the Lake District National Park.

If you’re visiting Muncaster for the day, put the postcode CA18 1RD into your Sat Nav or use the Google route planner below and that will guide you directly to our main Car Park. Please note that during the winter months (November to Easter), parking and entry for all customers is via the Church Lane entrance, 1/3 mile south of the main car park.

For visitors with disability/mobility concerns, we have a car park in the heart of the estate which can be accessed via Church Lane. This is approximately 1/3 mile around the corner from the main car park (heading south) and is the same entrance for coaches.

We have additional parking for our major festivals and parking is completely FREE, all day!

We look forward to welcoming you soon.

Walking from Ravenglass to Muncaster

There are two routes from the railway station. The simplest route is via the main road which is about a mile with a pavement all the way and will take 20-30 minutes. Alternative follow the Eskdale Trail cycle route, which will take you past the Roman Bath House and through delightful scenery, but takes between 30 and 40 minutes to walk and may be muddy in places.

DIRECTIONS FROM THE SOUTH:
  • Leave the M6 at Junction 36. Follow signs to Barrow (A590).
  • Before reaching Barrow turn right at Greenodd onto the A5092 (signposted Western Lake District, Workington and Whitehaven).
  • This joins the A595 which will bring you to Muncaster.
  • The journey will take approximately an hour and a quarter from Junction 36.
DIRECTIONS FROM THE NORTH:
  • From Carlisle follow the A595 to Cockermouth, and continue on past Whitehaven.
  • Alternatively take the westbound A66 from Penrith on the M6, following signs for Workington, then Whitehaven and A595 towards Barrow.
  • This road bypasses Ravenglass and goes straight through to Muncaster.
  • This journey should take about an hour and a half from Carlisle.
DIRECTIONS FROM THE EAST:
  • Take in one of ‘Britain’s Seven Wonders’ as voted by you in an RAC online poll by taking in the beautiful Hard Knott and Wrynose Passes from Ambleside – if you’re brave enough!
  • Around one hour in theory from Ambleside but allow longer at busier times and note that this road is frequently closed in winter.
